Mario Bros. Movie Walkie Talkies

I don’t think we’ve seen a lot of post regarding the Mario Bros. movie. There’s a good reason for that though.. I’m not sure how extensive the merchandise was to support the movie but there are very few of them that pops up on eBay every now and then. Last year, I posted the Goomba Bust mask I found by accident while doing some research (the actual mask is owned by our own Nicola – see the comments on that post) which was listed by it’s creator Vince Niebla.

And once again I found these by accident. These Mario Bros. movie walkie talkies are probably the first one in many years for sale on ebay. It’s nice that it has the original box at least. Created in 1993 by a company called Ertl out of Dyersville, Iowa. It is boxed and the seller stated that it is in good condition. Ertl also made action figures for the movie and a few of them listed new on ebay.

On a related note, Bob Hoskins, the guy who played Mario in the movie, had this to say in interview by the Guardian (published yesterday)

What is the worst job you’ve done?
Super Mario Brothers.

What has been your biggest disappointment?
Super Mario Brothers.

If you could edit your past, what would you change?
I wouldn’t do Super Mario Brothers.

  1. There’s actually a decent amount of SMB: The Movie merch out there–a coloring book, a lunch box, a 3-D book with an audio tape, action figures, trading cards…the list goes on! I’m a big fan of John Leguizamo and in his book he talks about how terrible the movie was as well. In one take, he talks about how he’s driving the van in the movie and slams on the break which swings the door shut on the passenger side, breaking Bob Hoskin’s hand (or finger, can’t remember which). If you look really close in the celebration scene of the movie, he has a cast on that is painted pink.

  2. I didn’t realize Nicola owns a goomba mask, I am super jealous! Would kill to have one of those in my collection, I assume they’re all in collector hands by now though

  3. I tried to find the scene but couldn’t find it, any chance you can screencap it Limbofunk?

Also I wish the movie had gotten a better dvd transfer, the one I have has horrible noise/blocking problems in the picture from the rush job they pulled. Makes for poor encoding to other formats too. Maybe someday :/

    • The scene he’s referring to wherein Bob has a broken pinkie is actually the final scene with the sequel hook, not the celebration scene. Look there!

A proper release with a better DVD transfer would be great, which is why we’re pressing for a Blu-Ray release for the movie’s 20th anniversary.

In the meantime, though, I can provide the best version if you’d like. We took the Swedish version, which has the best picture quality out there, and overlaid it with the American sound. Let me know!

      • Oh, I wasn’t aware the Swedish version received a better transfer. The US version is pretty abysmal, from what I understand it wasn’t improved in the reissued version either. Where might one obtain such a gem?

        • The Swedish version came out just last year, so it’s the most recent release out there. The movie is also vastly more popular in Europe, with Sweden being a bit market because of Roxette’s presence in it.

If you like, I can just E-mail you a download link on our site for that version. Just let me know.

In the meantime, our site is filling in for the abysmal release. We’re essentially the “special features” through our extensive behind the scenes, exclusive interviews, and deleted scenes pages.
