Kingdoms of Amalur is a new videogame IP set to debut on Feb. 7, 2012 on the PS3, Xbox 360, and PC.The first Kingdoms of Amalur game, in what may pan out to be a long series of games, is subtitled Reckoning.
Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning will be a single player action-adventure RPG that will be set in a massive fantasy world, named Amalur. You can expect your typical RPG/fantasy world fare like different playable classes and races, different geographical landscapes, all manner of creatures, monsters, magic, swords, arrows, and the like.
You may be thinking that this will likely be nothing more than just another average, cookie-cutter RPG at best; but there’s something quite interesting that may have you second-guessing this assessment.
You see, this new series is a collaborative effort between Ken Rolston of Big Huge Games, legendary comicbook artist/toy tycoon Todd McFarlane, and world renowned fantasy writer R.A. Salvatore; with Rolston serving as lead game designer, McFarlane serving as lead art director, and Salvatore’s writing laying the foundation for the franchise. Ken Rolston, in case you didn’t know, was the lead game developer for two of the most beloved Elder Scrolls games: Morrowind and Oblivion.
With such visionary creators at the helm, the stage is set for what may be the next great RPG. Whether it lives up to expectations though, remains to be seen.
Pre-orders for a special edition of Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning (called the Signature Edition) are already commanding big bucks on the secondary market. This is probably because the Signature Edition was limited to a single print run of only 300 total units and sold out from the game’s official website almost as quickly as they became available a few weeks back.
One listing ending today has the price currently at about $700, which is considerably more than the original $275 price tag.
The other listing can be found here and will set you back even further.
Perhaps if the series takes off, prices for the Signature Edition will continue to climb. One thing’s for sure though, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning is certainly shaping up to be a compelling title.
