We’re doing things a bit different this time, guys. Generally, we cover official games made by industry developers and producers. This time, we’re covering Chrono Trigger Crimson Echoes. For those of you who aren’t familiar with CTCE, it’s a fan made snes Chrono Trigger catridge.
CTCE was developed as a not for profit fan project. The international team Kajar Laboratories developed the original ROM hack from coding in Square’s Chrono Trigger. They envisioned CTCE serving as a chapter between the original “Chrono Trigger” and its PS1 sequal, “Chrono Cross.” The actual fan game itself runs off of the “Chrono Trigger” engine and features all of the characters from the original. Not suprisingly, CTCE features many game similarities to original snes game.
Square Enix sent Kajar Laboratories a cease and desist letter (which makes no sense since they made a video game based off of a 1995 game using older technology that in no way limited Square’s current sales). However, Square was too late. Kajar complied with the cease and desist, but many versions of the game were already released on the web. To this day, an original snes catridge of CTCE remains an essential video game collector’s item. That’s why, we’ve decided to compile a list of awesome CTCE ‘Bay listings for you collectors out there. You too can own a video game that’s highly illegal in the eyes of Square Enix!
