I can understand why people might feel compelled to drop hundreds of dollars on high level MMORPG accounts. You get stuff, access to new content, maybe play with your friends who started years ago, etc. Not something I would pay for, but i can understand why people would. Not so much for a COD4 XBOX Live account.
