Jersey Devil is definitely one of the early PS1 titles that I wanted to like when it first came out. In a way, it was sort of similar to Crash which at the time dominated the Ps1 charts and was considered the Playstation mascot.
This is a unique press kit where they used slides instead of actual photos. Slides were sort of a dying trend in the mid 90’s so I guess they probably thought they could save some extra dollars by using them. It also came with some written information and a VHS which shows a bit of its gameplay footage. Definitely a unique item and something you’ll probably never see again for awhile.
Another interesting information about this game was that the protagonist was a mythical creature seen in Southern New Jersey in 1735. Although the main character of the game resembles more of a bat than an actual devil like figure.
According to legend, while visiting the Hanover Mill Works to inspect his cannonballs being forged, Commodore Stephen Decatur sighted a flying creature flapping its wings and fired a cannonball directly upon it to no effect. Joseph Bonaparte, eldest brother of Emperor Napoleon, is also said to have witnessed the Jersey Devil while hunting on his Bordentown, New Jersey estate around 1820. Throughout the 19th century, the Jersey Devil was blamed for livestock killings, strange tracks, and reported sounds. In the early 20th century, a number of people in New Jersey and neighboring states claimed to witness the Jersey Devil or see its tracks. Claims of a corpse matching the Jersey Devil’s description arose in 1957. In 1960, the merchants around Camden offered a $10,000 reward for the capture of the Jersey Devil, even offering to build a private zoo to house the creature if captured.
Napoloen Bonaparte’s brother was probably in opium at the time. Maybe he had a little too much of Napoloen’s vintage wines.
