Now You’re Reading With Power

Ever since the magazine ceased circulation late last year, Nintendo Power has risen in eBay value. Whereas once entire fifty-pound lots could be had for $20 at the most, today any individual issue can go for $10 — and a landmark issue much more so. I feel fortunate I filled out my collection before this mess hit.

Several years ago I got a mint Issue 1 of NP as part of a lot for next to nothing. Now Nintendo Power #1 always sells for ridiculous prices no matter what condition it’s in. Take the shopworn example to the right: $79.99. Mama Mia.

Another in similar condition is being hawked for $55, but it doesn’t specify if the pull-out poster is still inside. This can be a problem with e-hunting magazine issues you can’t personally inspect. Issues missing their posters are missing a piece of the magazine itself, which continued its content on the backs of them.

Adding to the challenge is the fact that during the mag’s second year, extra books and inserts were stapled into the binding — and finding them unremoved can take some searching. January Bonus Issue inserts that weren’t stuck inside the magazine itself are also harder to nab.

Other NP-related auctions of memorable issues:

First six issues, plus four issues of Nintendo Fun Club News, ends soon with no bids at $100 (but a reserve is not met)

27-issue lot (48-54 56 58 61-73 75 76 78 79 82), no bids at $82.77

28-issue lot (14 16 18 21 23 24 26 34 37-47 56-62 65 66), no bids at $72.91

April 1993 — Star Fox, $7.99

May 1994 — Super Metroid, $9.99

Issue 111 (I single this one out because it and the next five after it contained an insert called “Pokemon Power,” anyone chasing these issues should be asking if they’re included).

The Nintendo Power Super Mario 3 Guide (which I consider the best guide ever written for any game) $22.95…this used to go for $10….

Happy hunting!
