Limited/Collector’s edition video games tend to be the holy grail for serious video game collectors. The more rare the collection, the better. For those of you who are unfamiliar with this system, developers and producers typically release a special edition box set to coincide with a video game’s regular release. These box sets include lavish gaming paraphernalia based on the game’s ip. These addons typically include such items as soundtracks, behind the scenes art work, hand made figures, and making the game DVD’s. For today’s post, we’ve decided to cut to the chase and focus on the most rare collectors edition video games. These babies typically go up in value over time. So, if you’re even remotely interested in collecting these limited edition box sets, get them while they’re new!
Fallout 3 Survival Collectors Edition
This once Amazon exclusive contained all sorts of nerdy swag to satiate the Fallout lovers out there. It includes staples such as a lunchbox to store your post apocalyptic rations, a Fallout mascot bobblehead and the to-scale, wrist mounted Pip-Boy 3000. I can remember the (appropriate) mass hype leading up to the release of Fallout 3. Oblivion set in the world of Fallout, yippee! Special preorders like this probably added fuel to that nerd-fire.  Unopened copies of this are circulating around the ‘Bay.
As a side note, if you’re looking for a frugal alternative, consider purchasing the Pip-Boy 3000 by itself here along with a used copy of the game. Voila – The poor man’s collector edition! That may detract from the collector aspect, but at least you won’t have to put a serious dent in your savings.
Dead Space Ultra Limited Edition
The Dead Space anime is sort of cool and everything. But, it’s not like this box set includes a life sized necromorph figure or something to that effect. Personally, I’d try to piece together different parts of the collection through eBay and craigslist.
The Beatles: Rock Band Limited Edition Premium Bundle
Despite these music games really fading in popularity, the limited edition Beatles Rock Band continues to grow in value. Luckily, the manufacturers made quite a few copies of this one (probably because they predicted its massive popularity). At least this game set includes useful goodies. The fake drum and bass guitar serve as controllers for the game itself. If you do happen to pick up a copy, don’t use it! You’ll thank me 20 years later when your set is worth 5 times more than what it is now.
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves – Fortune Hunter Edition
This is it, guys: the big leagues for video game collectors. This game may single-handedly stand as the rarest and expensive collectors edition box set ever in the video game world. That’s because only 200 were ever made. And, they were never actually sold. You had to win your copy of Uncharted 2 Fortune Hunter Edition by playing the game demo during select times of the year. You usually won’t find these on eBay. When you do, be prepared to drop a lot of loot to snag one.  Uncharted 2 Fortune Hunter Edition includes complementary butler service and a solid bar of gold (just kidding).
