Skull Island Atari 2600 Homebrew

From Kickstarter:

The Atari 2600, originally called the Atari VCS, is the godfather of modern video game systems, and helped spawn a multi-billion dollar industry. Atari sold over thirty million of the consoles, and together with other companies sold hundreds of millions of games. Cartridges for the system were produced across three decades, and there are still new games being produced today.

The system was made of mostly black plastic with a faux wood grain finish on part of it. You don’t find that type of comforting charm in many (any?) appliances today.

Most of the games (cartridges) were released in plastic cases. I thought it would be nice to release a game released in a limited edition version and to complement the faux wood grain of the original game system. I’ve located someone to build me the cartridge cases out of real hand carved wood! This will be strictly limited to 21 copies, individually numbered, and will be clear coated to protect them.

The game is called Skull Island. It’s a puzzle game with 40 levels ranging from beginner to expert. You can see a sample video I’ve attached here, but it’s had some updates since that video, mainly the title screen has changed.

The money will be used to make the cartridge cases, labels, manuals, boxes, game circuit boards, and assembly. The cases are quite costly to produce as they’re all made by hand. The first prototype will take a little longer to produce, but as the wood carver learns shortcuts he’ll be able to make them faster.

No more will be produced after this, so this will be extremely collectible and I’m sure will go up in value. Each limited edition cartridge will include: a cartridge label, instruction manual, and box.

The regular version of the game will come in a normal plastic case, but will also include the manual. Sorry, no box is being made for the regular version. The regular version is limited to 40 copies, also numbered.

The way Kickstarter works is to help fund creative ideas powered by a unique all-or-nothing funding method where projects must be fully-funded or no money changes hands.

The project currently has twelve backers, with $680 of $2,000 plegded and nine days to go.

You will receive one copy of a prototype of the game. Prototypes are works in progress and not the final product. The prototypes are mostly, if not fully, playable, and may contain minor bugs or graphical glitches. They most likely include the old title screen. These were used to test the game on a real system. They come in a plastic cartridge case with a prototype label.

You will receive one copy of the final release version of the game in limited edition real hand carved wood case. This version comes with the same labels and manual as above, but also a box! They’re all hand numbered and numbers are given out randomly.
